Ye West: Changing POC’s Political Perceptions
Iona Leys
On SNL, Kanye West wore a “Make America Great Again” hat, causing major uproar on social media. Additionally the fact that he said that wearing the hat made him feel, “like a superhero”. Since then, many people have decided to stop supporting the artist because of his political views and his support for Donald Trump. As a person who has enjoyed his music for a long time, hearing such news is upsetting because you want your artists to be supporting the same people that you do.
But Kanye has always been the kind of person that has had a strong opinion about certain things. Just look at his twitter, that basically shows his controversial opinions. To quote one of his tweets about Trump from Dylan Scott on Vox News, “You don't have to agree with trump but the mob can't make me not love him. We are both dragon energy. He is my
(Young)
brother. I love everyone.” He is basically saying that he actually admires Trump and that he doesn’t care about what the people say. This is surprising because back when Bush was president, he said that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people ” (Scott) after the president’s response on Hurricane Katrina. But now he is supporting a person who has called African countries; “sh*t-holes ” (Scott). No matter what Kanye has said or done, he has the right to free speech but the public perception of him will be more negative.
As a person who is a controversial figure in the media, it is not surprising that he supports Trump, who is also a controversial figure in the media. He has definitely compared wealth and the glitz and glam to Trump. His wife, Kim Kardashian, has publicly supported Hillary Clinton at her rallies and on her twitter as well. What she says about Kanye supporting Trump is that he never followed the opinion of the crowd (Scott). That he has very unique opinions about life. Kanye’s response to this was that he doesn’t 100% agree with all of Trump’s opinions and statements.
Kanye recently went to the White House to pay a visit to the big man himself. He called the visit inspirational and also how he vibed with what the president was saying and also what they discussed.
By praising the president, this means Kanye can be a Trump supporter. Does this mean that the youth of today has to support Trump? You are entitled to your own opinions even if you’re a fan of Kanye, you don’t have to support Trump. You also shouldn’t stop listening to Kanye’s music just because he supports Trump. It is just your opinion, for example, Chris Brown has allegedly abused Rihanna, and people still listen to his music. So can’t we say the same thing about Kanye. You can still like his music and hate Trump.
